The Choice of Faith
October 13, 2010
Written by Pastor Matt

Living everyday life with the faith that God is good, God is able and God is here, is a choice.  The definition of faith can be found in Hebrews 11.

“Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title-deed) of the things we hope for, being the proof of things we do not see and the conviction of their reality-faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses.”
(Hebrews 11:1 Amplified Version)

I believe that describes it best.  Faith is perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses.  You see, everyday we are faced with a choice.  Are we going to believe what we see in front of us and what our feelings tell us, or are we going to believe what God has spoken to us?  The way I experience it, there are differing levels of faith in our Christian walk.  There is faith for salvation. We are saved by grace, through faith (Eph. 2:8).  There is faith in the truth of His written word- the Bible. (2 Tim. 3:16)  And then there is faith in what the Holy Spirit has spoken directly and personally to us (Acts 8:28, 9:10-16, 10:19, 13:2).  It is this last mentioned area which requires the most faith in my life.  In some ways it is easy to believe in salvation and believe in what the Bible says.  There have been years of study by thousands and thousands of people in relation to the Scriptures.  There is archeological evidence to the validity of what the Bible says.  When I believe in the Bible, I am not simply relying on my own faith, but I am riding on the faith and work of thousands of Christians before me.  However, when the Holy Spirit speaks directly to me about a very personal and individual issue, I am left alone in my choice.  I no longer have the years of evidence and thoughts of thousands before me regarding the validity of what the Holy Spirit is telling me.  Yes, I do still have the foundation of truth in the Bible, which I rely on.  In other words, if what I think the Holy Spirit is telling me falls outside of what the Bible has already spoken as truth, then I can count my thought as false.  But what about the times when the Scripture will not prove or disprove what I think God is telling me?  In Acts 9:10-16 the Holy Spirit tells Ananias to put his life in danger and go speak to a man who came to his home town to destroy the church. Ananias had to choose to have a conviction of the reality of what he heard the Holy Spirit telling him.  Faith did not simply come over him, but instead, he chose to believe.  In the same way, we have a choice.  Is there an area in your life where you feel God has spoken?  Has He asked you to do something?  Has He told you to believe in His goodness?  I would challenge you today to take the leap of faith.  That is, make the choice and believe.  In the words of Jesus, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" (John 11:40)

What glory of God is waiting to be revealed to you?
