Delighting in the law?
December 8, 2010
Written by Pastor Matt

     Psalm 1:1-3

“Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
   whatever they do prospers.”

I read this the other day and something caught my eye.  Do I truly delight in the law of the Lord?  When I hear the word “law”, what comes to mind is legalistic rule following that chokes out life.  My mind recollects verses in Romans and Galatians that speak of us not being bound by the law because we are saved by grace.  However, I believe that as is true with most of God’s truth, if it is skewed just a little bit, the entire significance of the truth is lost- and can even lead to meanings opposite of the original intention.
This is what I got from my questions.  As Christians, we are not held to the law of the Old Testament- that is what Jesus did for us, and that is where grace comes in.  However, if we look at the law as meaning God’s desire and will for how to order our lives, then by all means we should follow it.  So following the law of the Lord means to follow His will, which is a “good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom. 12:2).  If there is any doubt in our minds that following commands is still a major part of a life saved by grace, we only need to look at the words of Jesus.  “If you love me you will obey my commands” (John 14:23).
So what is the outcome of delighting in God’s law or will for our lives? Psalm 1 says, “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither- whatever they do prospers.”  So God’s law/commandment/will is to make us like trees planted by the water.  Our roots would be drinking from the living water.  Only in this way can we be a flourishing tree of life which provides shelter and shade for those around.  In other words, only by aligning our lives in every way according to His Will, will we experience the fullness of love, life and purpose in our lives. Now that is something I can delight in.  Won’t you join with me in pursuing the delight of God’s law?
